“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey”.

Eleanor Chen didn’t know her son Jack knew the words to this beautiful, old song.

After spending the day at child care, Jack came home and sang the song to his baby sister.

Jack had learnt the song from ACH Group Milpara resident Bessie Dickins.

He affectionately referred to Bessie as his “Grandma”.

With all of Jack’s grandparents living in China, his relationship with Bessie became a special one.

Inspired by the success of the ABC’s ‘Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds’, residential living provider ACH Group wanted to create an intergenerational program in Adelaide to bring together residents, occupational therapy students from University of South Australia and children from a local childcare centre.

Ivy Diegman, General Manager of Service Design with the ACH Group joined ABC Radio Adelaide’s Sonya Feldhoff, along with Bessie and Eleanor, to talk about the benefits this program brought for everyone involved.
