The driver of a car that was allegedly stolen has fled the scene of a huge crash on a Melbourne highway that killed their passenger.
Emergency services were called to the Burwood Highway in Burwood around 1.20am on Wednesday to reports the car had smashed into a pole.
There was a passenger in the car and they died at the scene.
Detectives are now searching for the driver of the vehicle, who allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.
The passenger is yet to be formally identified.
The car is believed to be the same one that was stolen from the Reservoir area on either July 15 or 16.
There are delays on the Burwood Highway with the road closed to city-bound traffic between Station Street and Middleborough Road.
That stretch of the highway will be closed for some time as police investigate the scene.
Drivers have been urged to use Highbury Road or Canterbury Road as alternatives and allow extra time.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, have dashcam footage or know the whereabouts of the driver have been urged to contact police.
