A young child has died after fire ripped through a home in Melbourne’s southeast on Sunday night.

Police say crews were called to the fire just before 10pm on Leonard Street in Dandenong.

Three adults and two children managed to escape, but another child couldn’t be saved.

A neighbour suffered serious burns as he desperately tried to save the small child.

The man, aged in his thirties, was taken to hospital.

A crime scene has been established and the house is under police guard.

It’s unclear what caused the fire. Investigators will examine the scene on Monday morning.

Laverton fire

In a second fire tragedy in Melbourne overnight, a woman was killed in her Laverton home.

Emergency crews were called to the Badge Court property just after midnight.

The woman’s body was located inside the “extensively damaged” home.

Two other occupants managed to escape to safety.
