He was cycling in Geraldton when an oncoming car being driven by an angry road rager ran over him.
In the aftermath of the crash, he feared the worst – but at least his girlfriend Leela is by his side.
“His first thought is that he could never walk again,” Leela told 7NEWS.
The fears of the outdoor enthusiast were confirmed by doctors, who say his chances of a full recovery are slim.
But the couple is still hopeful.
“We are still positive and hope, we have so much hope, and we want to make him walk again,” Leela said.
Despite being the victims of senseless violence, the German couple believes luck is on their side.
They say Steve’s life was saved by quick-thinking strangers who raced to his rescue and to medical staff in Geraldton and Perth.
“I’m just so happy that he’s here and he’s alive,” Leela said.
“I told him, no matter what the future will bring, whether he’s in a wheelchair or can walk, I will stay with you and be with you.”
Steve and Leela were preparing to get married on May 20.
Because the date is the anniversary of when they met, they’re determined to tie the knot, even if it’s in a hospital bed.
They are also hoping the driver is justly punished.
He is behind bars waiting to face court.
“I hope he goes in jail for a long, long time and can’t do this to anyone else,” Steve said.
