Cameras captured the moment the motorcyclist, trailing behind a bus, tries to overtake it by crossing into a lane of oncoming traffic.
The motorcyclist does not see a car coming towards him.
Within seconds of crossing into the lane, the two collide and the motorcyclist is sent flying through the air.
His bike is trapped and dragged under the car.
Those first on the scene recalled the man screaming.
“It is horrific, it’s one of the worst I’ve seen,” witness Simon Papagni said.
“I was starting to cut his jacket off to remove his clothing. It was just really bad, just moaning and screaming.”
The 32-year-old was treated for more than two hours at the scene before he was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the car was uninjured, as was his young daughter in the passenger seat.
Locals aren’t surprised there’s been a crash, saying motorists frequently take unnecessary risks.
“A lot too many intersections and people just put their foot down,” witness to the crash Tony Watkins said.
