A COVID rule forcing gym-goers to wear face masks during group classes has been scrapped in NSW.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard made amendments to the state’s public health orders on Thursday after widespread complaints from fitness fanatics.

Many people said wearing face coverings while working out made it hard for them to breathe, arguing that the requirement was not practical.

Masks can now be removed during indoor gym and dance classes as well as on the gym floor.

However they are still required to be worn in other indoor areas of a gym, including changing rooms and reception.

Gyms in NSW are currently open to fully vaccinated people with a density limit of one person per four square metres and classes are capped at 20 attendees.
