Jessica Simpson has shared an new “unrecognisable” image of herself as she opens up about her battle to get sober.

The singer and actress said the picture, taken four years ago, marked the moment she decided to turn her life around and stop drinking.

In the pic, Jessica – dressed in a pink tracksuit – appears bloated and disorientated, with glassy eyes.

Posting on Instagram to her 5.6 million followers, Simpson said her years of boozing had left her “exhausted”.

“This person in the early morning of Nov 1, 2017, is an unrecognisable version of myself,” the 41-year-old wrote.

“I had so much self discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.

“Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted.

“I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honour.

“I wanted to live as a leader does and break cycles to advance forward – never looking back with regret and remorse over any choice I have made and would make for the rest of my time here within this beautiful world.”

The mother-of-three went on to say that she “didn’t love myself” before she got sober, adding that there’s a heavy stigma around the word “alcoholism”.

“I can’t believe it has been four years! It feels like maybe two. I think that is a good thing. Ha,” she said.

“There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic.

“The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage. The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself.

“I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do. I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad. I own my personal power with soulful courage.

“I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free.”

In her memoir Open Book, which was released in 2020, Simpson talked about her battle with drugs and alcohol.

“I was killing myself with all the drinking and pills,” she said.

“Giving up the alcohol was easy. I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb.”

Since getting clean, Jessica has lost a whopping 45kg, walking 14,000 steps and day and following a strict diet.

“We have a big family so we’re always on the go, go, go — even if it’s just in the house, the yard or the neighbourhood. We go on family walks, we visit the pigs in the neighbourhood, we visit the horses,” she told Hollywood Life.

“We’re constantly active and if our kids are going stir crazy, we all go jump on the trampoline. Just get it out, get the energy out.”
