Where did Lorde go?
That’s the question on the lips of anyone who bought and loved her 2013 debut album Pure Heroine and its 2017 follow-up, Melodrama.
For a while there, Lorde was everywhere – on the radio, in magazines, at a gig near you.
But then she seemed to disappear.
It’s been four years since Melodrama and the New Zealand singer, 24, hasn’t indicated any new albums are in the works.
Instead, fans have had to make do with an unusual Instagram account dedicated to onion rings she has eaten around the world.
It’s quite literally called Onion Rings Worldwide.
But she hasn’t even posted to that account in recent times – her last onion ring post was on December 20 last year.
However, a new and rare picture of Lorde has surfaced on social media.
The photo was taken by friend and photographer Albert Cho at a restaurant in Auckland, where he was celebrating his birthday.
Lorde looks to be channelling an Audrey Hepburn vibe in the photo, looking very slender in an elegant white blouse with her hair pulled back.
Cho’s comments were inundated with requests to ask Lorde to hurry up and make a new album.
“Tell her to give us new music!” one Lorde fan wrote.
“Tell Lorde to pls not disappear from the sun again. We need her album to put on sad boy hours,” another said.
“Guys, stop terrorising him in the comments,” one person admonished.
After completing the Melodrama world tour in 2018, Lorde began to live quietly at home in New Zealand.
In November last year, Lorde spoke to Interview magazine, explaining why she was retreating from social media.
“Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country,” she said.
“[It] destroys the part of my brain that can make work … How do you balance needing to have your finger on the pulse while also not going insane?”
